We often talk about the faith as a fight. We know how to get back up when we fall, but there is a second battle we face that is just as critical: the daily grind of perseverance.

Christ commands us in the Gospel of Luke: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” — Luke 9:23.

Notice the word daily.

We cannot rest upon the good deeds we did yesterday. Yesterday’s grace was given for yesterday’s battles. A man who relies on past victories quickly grows spiritually soft.

Nor can we rest upon the grand promises of what we plan to do tomorrow. Tomorrow is guaranteed to no man. We only have right now.

To follow Christ deeply means renewing our faith every single day through action.

As men, we often want to offer God a massive, heroic gesture. We look for a defining sacrifice. But true devotion is rarely loud, and it is rarely grand. It is forged in the quiet consistency of small, unseen things.

It is the five minutes of silent prayer before the rest of the house wakes up. It is holding your tongue when you are exhausted and provoked. It is helping to gather your family for the Rosary when you would rather collapse in front of a screen.

These small, daily acts are how we show God we love Him. They are the bricks that build a fortress of faith.

Do not wait for a grand moment to prove your devotion. Do not look to yesterday, and do not wait for tomorrow. Pick up your cross today.
